Week 3-4 Assignment Pt. 1

For this assignment I reviewed the shots taken by two of my classmates, commenting on the shots they chose to use and the emotions they conveyed. My comments are listed here.

Maddie Hopkins:
There were many shots that I was impressed with. I thought the cameo shot was well done because you used the background to your advantage. The neutral colors made the subject really stand out against the background, but also blend in with the green of Starbucks. I also enjoyed the follow shot, because the subject was not in view at the beginning of the shot, and then entered halfway through the shot. I thought this was creative and can be effectively used to convey certain emotions. The eye level shot was effective in making the audience feel like they were in conversation with the subject, and the inclusion of the table at the bottom of the shot also contributed to this feeling. The pan shot did a nice job of capturing the surroundings of the shot and really helped to set the scene for what might come next. Overall, great job!

Jairo Garciga:
There were a lot of shots that stuck out to me as really helping the viewer understand who the subject was. In the Close Shot, the camera angle being at eye level really tells the audience who we should focus on. With the Low Angle shot, the camera is focused on the subject and the row of desks, which they is in the front of, really directs a viewers eye to the subject. The Dolly Shot also used geometry effectively; the walls of the hallway create a one-point perspective that draws the audience in towards the subject The critique I have is for the Close-up Shot. The time that was spent holding the pencil in the view of the shot did not feel realistic, he would not have lingered so much. Taking the pencil out of the shot while still focusing on where the pencil once was may create a more realistic result. Overall, great work! I enjoyed your shots!
